Description
Green abalone seashells come from large mollusks that live in the Pacific sea, often found in the coasts of California and Mexico. To Indigenous cultures across the world, green abalone seashells are considered a gift from the ocean, with their beautiful Mother of pearl hues treasured as a reflection of the seas.
Green abalone seashells are known in New Zealand as “paua”, and are believed to harness the healing power of the ocean.
To Native Americans, green abalone represents the element of water, as reflected in their beautiful green and blue hues. Green abalone seashells are often used in sage smudging rituals for practical and spiritual reasons. Abalone will catch any hot cinders that fall away from the smudge sticks after they have burnt, and will not catch fire or burn through.
For Native American tribes such as the Apache, smudging with green abalone is believed to keep you connected to the healing energy of the ocean. Smudging with green abalone also brings a sense of balance as the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water are brought together during the smudge ritual.
